Our Ice Driver is Juha Kankkunen
Juha Kankkunen is a ice driver and was born in Laukaa which is a small town in Finland on the 2nd April 1959. He is now 52 years old. Juha has become one of the most experienced rally drivers of his time over the many years of his long driving career in his many years of rally driving and also different driving techniques.
Juha has been dubbed as the “Fastest man on Ice”
Juha first started his magnificent rally career back in 1978 alongside ice driver taking the big step up into the World Rally Championship in 1983 and his career span lasted until 2002. In his long 24 year career
Juha managed to win 23 of his world rallies with taking home 4 WRC Gold Medals.
Kankkunen’s wins of the WRC were became records in these driving techniques. This was when he became world champion with 3 different car manufacturers.
He was first signed by Toyota back in 1983; he took his first WRC win in his third year of being part of the team.
Juha was noticed by many of the other team manufacturers and decided to leave and sign for the defending world champions in 1986, the team was Peugeot. This team switch enabled Kankkunen to become the series youngest ever champion. Juha Kankkunen then moved over to Lancia after Peugeot found out about the ban of Group B.
Ice Driving
Kankkunen was able to defend his title with Lancia, he then returned to Toyota driving in their team for two years and they took a switch back to the Lancia team to record his third title in 1991.
It was 1993 when Juha took the step back to signing for Toyota and he clinched his fourth world championship title. Toyota got handed a Disqualification and recieced a 12 month ban in 1995 and Kankkunen decided to have a few years out returning half way through the 1997 season.
He then moved team and joined Subaru for the 1999 season and this enabled him to secure his first win in over 5 years. Juha retired after the end of the 2002 season but spent this year competing part time for the Hyundai team.
Juha has become more and more intrested in his Ice Driver career as time goes on. His name is becoming more and more popular with the things he does.
